Learn to Surf in Costa Rica

Personalized coaching for every level, from first wave to advanced maneuvers

Surf Coaching for All Levels

Kalon is built to make you a better surfer — or get you surfing for the first time. Not through theory-heavy classroom sessions, but through a playful, hands-on method refined over more than a decade. Your coach creates an environment where learning feels easy, falling is part of the fun, and real progress happens without it ever feeling like school.

Muscle Memory

The Pop-Up Method

The 1-2-3 pop-up isn't just about getting up — it's about having your arms, knees, and hips right from the start so you can actually surf. You'll drill it on the beach before the water, quick and often, building muscle memory that kicks in when it counts.

Pool Technique Sessions

Most surfers underestimate how much paddling matters. In the infinity pool sessions you'll fix arm entry, body position, and timing. Better technique means catching waves others miss, with less effort.

Daily Video Analysis

Every session is filmed. Back at the resort, your coach breaks down the footage frame by frame — in a group setting, intentionally. Beginners learn from watching advanced guests. Experienced surfers rediscover why foundations matter.

Why We Built This Method

Before starting Kalon, we visited surf camps around the world — a lot of them. Every one had parts that worked and parts that didn't. So when Kalon was created, the approach was to cherry-pick the best and rethink the rest.

The early coaches were incredible surfers — they'd been riding waves their whole lives. But being a good surfer and teaching someone to surf are two completely different things. Ask them to break down how they generate speed on a wave, and the answer was just a hand gesture.

So we worked together to decode every movement into something teachable: what your hips should do, where your arms need to be, how your knees drive each turn. That process — turning instinct into instruction — became the foundation of everything at Kalon. It's why beginners progress faster, and experienced surfers finally fix the things they've been compensating for.

Your First Week: How It Works

If you've never surfed before — or want to build a proper foundation — here's how your week unfolds. Each part reinforces the last, so progress compounds fast.

On the Beach
The 1-2-3 Pop-Up (No Knee)
You'll learn a 1-2-3 slide pop-up — not using a knee. Why? A knee pop-up can cause a slight delay, a moment of imbalance, and your feet often end up in the wrong position. This method puts your feet right, your upper body ready, and your arms in position to actually surf — not just stand. If an injury requires a knee pop-up, your coach will adapt. But starting here sets up everything that comes later.
In the Pool
Paddling, Duck Dives & Breathing
Pool sessions go beyond paddling technique. You'll also work on turtle rolls and duck dives — how to get through waves safely without exhausting yourself. And breathing exercises help you understand your body's real capacity. Most guests feel noticeably calmer once they understand their breathing and recovery. That confidence translates directly to the ocean — you're more in control and less likely to panic.
In the Ocean
Whitewater First, Then Green Waves
Beginners start in the whitewater — where waves have already broken. Why? Because it's safe, and you can catch 20 to 30 waves in a single session instead of 2 or 3 out back. Massive repetition builds skill fast. Once you're ready, your coach moves you to unbroken green waves. By then, your paddling is already solid from the pool work, so the transition feels natural.
Back at the Resort
Group Video Analysis
Between sessions, your coach plays back the day's footage frame by frame. The group setting is intentional — beginners learn from watching advanced guests get feedback on turns. Advanced surfers see a beginner nail a perfect pop-up and remember why foundations matter. Video reveals things you simply can't feel in the moment. All photos and videos from every session are uploaded to a private Google Photos folder for your group — yours to keep, download, and share.

Already have experience? Intermediate and advanced sessions follow a different structure — customized after your coach assesses your level and identifies what will make the biggest difference.

Already Have Experience?

If you're an intermediate or advanced surfer, your sessions look different. There's no set program — your coach assesses where you are after the first session and builds a plan around what will make the biggest difference for you. Often, the biggest unlock isn't learning a new trick — it's fixing the foundational issues that have been holding you back. And that requires being open to feedback.

Here's a real example: you arrive wanting to ride barrels. Great goal. But to get there, you need speed — and to generate speed, you need proper upper body technique. Your coach might notice your arms are down at your sides, which might look fine on a mellow wave, but won't be effective when you need to make turns, build speed, or set yourself up for a barrel section. If that's identified, you'll work on it — even if it means spending time on foundations before chasing the goal.

That's the difference between coaching and just surfing. If you're an intermediate or advanced surfer, being open to that process is key. If you come in set on a specific maneuver but aren't willing to address the fundamentals holding you back, real progress becomes difficult. That's honest — not to discourage you, but because it's how you actually get better. Your coach will absolutely work toward your goal — you'll just earn it in the right order.

Equipment & On the Beach

You'll choose from around 60 surfboards — from 5'8" to 10'2" — across all kinds of models for every level and style. Your coach matches you to the right board each day based on the conditions and where you are in your progression. Want to try something different? Just ask.

During sessions, a beach setup is ready for you — shade, fresh fruit, and water. Staff are there throughout, taking the photos and video that feed your coaching analysis. No alcohol on the beach for safety reasons, but a cold beer or fresh juice is waiting back at the resort.

Professional helmets — the same ones pro surfers use — are available and recommended. Every coach is lifeguard trained. Surfing is an adventure sport, and your safety is taken seriously.

Your Coaches

Your coach isn't necessarily the best surfer on the beach — they're the best teacher. That's the hiring standard at Kalon: passion for teaching, not just talent on a wave.

Some coaches learned through the Kalon method themselves — which is actually a great example of why it works. They understand the difficulties from their own experience. Others have surfed their whole lives but can translate what they know into clear, consistent instruction that follows the methodology.

Every coach gives you the same fundamentals, the same feedback framework, the same attention. You won't see your coach catching waves during your session — they're in the water focused entirely on you. Passionate, driven, and genuinely invested in your progress, whatever level you're at.

Programs for Every Level

Everyone goes to the same beach near Dominical — beginners work in the whitewater on foundations, pop-ups, and turning, while intermediate and advanced surfers ride the unbroken waves further out. Same location, different zones, and your coach is always with your group.

Common Questions

Is Kalon Right For Me?

I’m new to surfing. Is Kalon a good place to start?

Very much so. Many of our guests arrive with little or no prior surf experience—some are stepping on a surfboard for the first time, while others may have only tried a few times before. Our coaching is structured, patient, and highly personalized, with typically a 3:1 guest-to-coach ratio. This allows us to meet you exactly where you are and help you build confidence step by step.

What type of guests usually come to Kalon?

More than any specific demographic, our guests are connected by a shared mindset. They are typically between 30 and 65, lead full lives back home, and come to Kalon to truly unplug—to eat well, relax, and spend time in nature. We welcome solo travelers, couples, friends, and families. The atmosphere is easy-going and unpretentious: social enough to connect over dinner, while still offering plenty of space and privacy when you want it.

Do I need to be very fit or athletic to join?

Not at all. We welcome guests of all backgrounds and fitness levels. Everyone brings different strengths—balance, flexibility, leg strength, or coordination. What consistently makes the biggest difference is mindset. Guests who stay relaxed, patient, and open to learning tend to progress the most. Our role is to adapt the coaching to you, not the other way around.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You should feel comfortable in the water, but you do not need to be an elite swimmer. Beginners start in the white water, where you can build confidence and familiarity before progressing further out. Only once you feel ready and comfortable would you move on to green waves. We also incorporate breathing exercises in the pool to help you feel more at ease holding your breath. All of our coaches are lifeguard trained and remain close by in the water.
The Surf & Coaching

I have surf experience. Will I still get value from the coaching?

Absolutely. We regularly welcome experienced surfers, and our coaching is very detail-oriented. We often revisit fundamentals if we identify habits that could be limiting your progression. For example, small details in stance, pop-up mechanics, or positioning during a bottom turn can make a significant difference. We will work on maneuvers, but also refine the foundations underneath them when needed.

What kind of waves will we surf?

We surf beach breaks. We focus on uncrowded beaches where there is space to learn, practice, and progress without pressure. The specific beach is chosen daily based on conditions, allowing us to find the best waves for your level.

How is the surf week structured?

We surf five days a week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Sessions are typically 3 to 4 hours. All sessions are scheduled around the ocean tides, typically from mid to high tide, as low tide does not work well at the breaks we use. Since tides shift approximately 40 to 60 minutes each day, the schedule naturally moves with them.

Do I need to bring my own surfboard?

You are welcome to, but it is not necessary. We provide a full quiver of high-quality boards for all levels. For our intermediate and advanced guests, we feature a selection of Firewire and Slater Designs boards. This allows you to test drive top-tier equipment suited to the specific waves we are surfing that day, without the hassle of traveling with a board bag.
Equipment & Experience

Is the water cold? Do I need a wetsuit?

No wetsuit is needed. Water temperatures are typically at least 78°F (25–26°C), making it comfortable year-round. We provide you with a surf rash guard, which is yours to keep. For women, a secure one-piece or surf bikini is recommended, and surf shorts can be helpful. For men, boardshorts work well, ideally in a four-way stretch material for added comfort and mobility.

What should I pack for surfing?

Very little. We provide your surfboard, leash, rash guard, and high-quality sunblock (zinc). With warm water and premium equipment included, all you really need is comfortable swimwear. We take care of the rest.

What happens on Wednesday?

Wednesday is intentionally unscheduled from surfing. Some guests choose to fully relax—enjoying their included massage and taking time by the pool. Others combine relaxation with an optional tour, exploring the nature around us at the start of the Osa Peninsula. It is a flexible day designed to give you space, whether that means adventure or deep rest.

I don’t surf, but my partner does. What will my days look like?

Non-surfing guests never feel like they are “on the sidelines.” While the group is surfing, you will enjoy a restorative spa experience, which includes two massages and a facial, thoughtfully scheduled throughout the week. You are always welcome at the beach—our team is there to set you up with towels or a hammock—or you can relax back at the resort. You are also invited to join the yoga sessions, coffee tasting, cooking class, and even the video analysis. Guests consistently tell us they feel included, looked after, and free to enjoy the week at their own pace.
